Wu Yize Wins Shenzhen Open, Securing World No. 2 Ranking
Chinese snooker star Wu Yize claims his first ranking title since becoming world champion, propelling him to a career-high world No. 2 and marking a milestone for Chinese snooker.
Wu Yize captured his first ranking title since his world championship victory, defeating fellow Chinese player Yuan Sijun 10-5 in the Shenzhen Open final. The win not only signifies a personal achievement for the 22-year-old but also elevates him to a career-best world ranking of second, behind Zhao Xintong.
This achievement by Wu, coupled with Zhao's top ranking, means China now holds the top two positions in the world snooker rankings for the first time, underscoring the nation's growing dominance in the sport. Wu had previously become the second-youngest player to win snooker's most prestigious title at the Crucible in May.
In the Shenzhen Open final, held at the Bao'an Sports Centre on Sunday, Wu demonstrated composure against Yuan, who was appearing in his first ranking final. Wu established an early lead with breaks of 117 and 80, moving to 3-1. Yuan mounted a comeback, winning three consecutive frames to level the score.
However, Wu responded by securing two more half-century breaks in the final frames of the opening session, ending it with a 5-4 advantage. The match's trajectory shifted decisively in the evening session when Wu extended his lead with breaks of 74 and 62, reaching an 8-5 advantage as Yuan struggled with his safety play. Yuan, 26, was unable to recover, allowing Wu to secure the trophy and the top prize of £177,000.
With this victory, Wu overtakes Judd Trump and Neil Robertson in the world rankings, securing the second spot. Yuan's performance in reaching the final saw him climb seven places to 26th in the rankings and earn £76,000.
