World Cup Goalkeeper Laments Loss of Peace After Viral Fame

Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper for Cape Verde, has expressed a deep regret over the loss of his privacy and peace following his viral fame during the World Cup. Once an unknown player in the Portuguese second division, Vozinha emerged as a global sensation, accumulating nearly 30 million followers on social media.

His newfound celebrity has transformed everyday activities into complex challenges. Even simple outings like visiting a restaurant have become logistically difficult, and fans frequently gather outside his mother's home in Cape Verde. "I’ve lost my peace and tranquillity," Vozinha told The Observer. "I no longer have any privacy, or at least much less than I used to. Now I go out, I go to a restaurant, and there’s always someone who wants to take a photo with me or asks me for an autograph. Or, worse, someone is filming me. That’s what has changed most in my life, and I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it."

Vozinha stated that if offered a choice between his current life and his pre-fame existence, he would choose the latter. He noted that while many desire fame, they often overlook its negative aspects.

Cape Verde became a beloved underdog during their unexpected World Cup run, reaching the Round of 32 and pushing Argentina to extra time. As the smallest nation to ever compete in the tournament, their journey captured international attention. Vozinha's performance was pivotal, including seven saves in their opening 0-0 draw against Spain. His social media following surged from 50,000 before the tournament to nearly 30 million by its conclusion.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper has since experienced unique forms of recognition, including having a new species of sea slug named after him, and he signed with Chile's most successful club, Colo-Colo.

Recounting the moment he realized the extent of his fame, Vozinha recalled a team catering staff member informing him he had a billion followers after the Spain game. Initially disbelieving, he later saw confirmation on a journalist's phone, showing over a million followers. To manage the situation, he decided to disable Instagram notifications to avoid constant tracking of his follower count.

While acknowledging numerous brand and company offers, Vozinha limited himself to one promotional collaboration during the World Cup. He expressed his intention to avoid partnerships with tobacco, alcohol, or betting companies in the future.

His heroic performances brought him almost 30 millio followers on Instagram
