WNBA Semifinals Tighten as Liberty and Aces Face Elimination
Star players A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart headline must-win games Tuesday night as their teams trail their respective WNBA semifinal series 0-2.
The WNBA Playoffs are reaching a critical juncture, with the New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces both facing 0-2 series deficits heading into pivotal Game 3s on Tuesday night. The Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries each have an opportunity to close out their semifinal matchups on the road.
The Atlanta Dream have shown significant improvement this season, building on previous years with the addition of Angel Reese, who earned WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. The Dream have won four consecutive playoff games, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2018.
The Liberty, who were preseason favorites, entered the playoffs as the lowest seed but managed to upset the top-seeded Lynx. Despite strong performances from Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, New York lost Game 1 by 10 points and Game 2 in overtime by three. Shifting back to New York may provide a boost, and the team is expected to fight to keep their championship hopes alive.
In the other semifinal, the Golden State Valkyries have found their stride after a rocky start to the playoffs. Gabby Williams has emerged as a key player, averaging 24 points per game in the postseason and scoring 45 points combined in the Valkyries' two victories against the Aces.
The Las Vegas Aces rely heavily on their star player, A'ja Wilson, who recently secured her fifth MVP award. Wilson has averaged 24 points in the series against the Valkyries, but it has not been enough to secure a win. Despite the challenges, Wilson is expected to lead a strong home performance for the Aces in Game 3.
Both games represent a critical turning point for the Liberty and Aces, who must win three consecutive games to advance to the WNBA Finals.
