WNBA Finals Game 6 Kicks Off Midday Amid Fan Outrage Over Scheduling
The Atlanta Dream forced a Game 7 against the Golden State Valkyries, but the early start time drew criticism from fans.
WNBA fans expressed frustration on Thursday as Game 6 of the 2026 Finals between the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries began at 12:30 p.m. EST. The mid-day tip-off, necessitated by scheduling conflicts at Atlanta's State Farm Arena, meant Bay Area fans of the Valkyries were tuning in around 9:30 a.m. local time.
Fans voiced their displeasure on social media platforms like X. "Why is there a WNBA FINALS game being played right now?!" one user questioned. "It's 1pm on a non holiday." Another commented that "having the WNBA FINALS in the middle of the afternoon is nasty work."
The Dream were initially scheduled to play at the smaller Gateway Center Arena, but high ticket demand prompted a move to the larger State Farm Arena. However, the arena's primary tenants, the Atlanta Hawks, were set to host the Cleveland Cavaliers that evening, pushing the WNBA Finals game to an earlier slot.
Despite the unconventional timing, State Farm Arena was sold out for the matinee game, with notable attendees including Grammy winner Usher and comedian Wanda Sykes.
Golden State coach Natalie Nakase stated her team was prepared for the scheduling, having known about it since it was announced. The Valkyries had found success by tweaking their lineup, with Nakase introducing Tiffany Hayes and Kaila Charles into the starting five, leading to wins in Games 4 and 5. Nakase described the team's acceptance of these changes as having "zero tension... no ego."
Dream coach Karl Smesko expressed a desire for more consistent officiating throughout the series, noting the difficulty in planning due to perceived inconsistencies in how contact is called. "It's hard to plan because you don't know on which day if it's going to be tight or if they're going to let as much contact as has been going on the last couple games," Smesko said.
The Dream ultimately defeated the Valkyries 80-69 in Game 6, forcing a decisive Game 7 to be played on Saturday night in San Francisco.
