WNBA Finals Faces Venue Conflict in Atlanta for Potential Game 6
The Atlanta Dream's home arena is double-booked with an NBA game, creating uncertainty for a deciding WNBA Finals matchup.
The WNBA Finals is encountering another scheduling challenge, with the Atlanta Dream potentially facing a venue conflict for a decisive Game 6 on Thursday, October 29. The Dream and the Golden State Valkyries are currently tied 2-2 in the best-of-seven series, guaranteeing a return to Atlanta for Game 6.
The issue arises because State Farm Arena, the larger venue the Dream have been using for their playoff games, is already scheduled to host an NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7 p.m. that evening. The WNBA Finals game is slated to begin an hour later, creating a direct conflict.
Previously, the Dream moved Game 3 from Thursday, October 22, to Wednesday, October 21, to avoid a concert conflict. Game 4 on Saturday was moved to an earlier afternoon start to accommodate the Hawks' home opener against the Houston Rockets.
State Farm Arena, which can hold approximately 17,000 spectators, was chosen by the Dream over their usual home, Gateway Center Arena in College Park, which seats only 3,500. This move has been supported by sellout crowds during the Finals.
Options to resolve the Thursday conflict are limited. One possibility reported by The Athletic is rescheduling the Hawks-Cavaliers game to Friday, though this would create a back-to-back situation for both NBA teams and coincide with the opening night of NBA Cup group play. Another option would be for the Dream to return to their smaller home venue, which would significantly limit fan capacity for a championship game.
Alternative Atlanta-area venues like Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion and the Georgia State Convocation Center have also been suggested, according to CBS Sports.
Dream star Angel Reese has expressed a preference for remaining at State Farm Arena, citing the strong fan support. "The fan support here has been amazing, and we appreciate the love and support," Reese said following Saturday's loss.
The Dream are scheduled to play Game 5 in San Francisco on Monday night before returning to Atlanta for the potential Game 6 on Thursday. The team is planning to move into State Farm Arena full-time starting with the 2027 season, which is expected to alleviate future scheduling difficulties.
