Wimbledon quarter-finalist Demi Schuurs collided with a ball girl on Court No. 3 during a women's doubles match on Thursday, resulting in both individuals requiring medical attention. The incident occurred in the first set of the match between Schuurs and her partner Ellen Perez against Shuko Aoyama and En-shou Laing, with the score tied at 3-3.
Schuurs was retrieving a forehand shot at the back of the court when she collided with the ball girl. Both fell to the ground, with Schuurs appearing to have sustained the more significant impact. The area at the back of the court is concrete, raising immediate concerns for their safety.
A physiotherapist attended to Schuurs, checking her arms and knees. Despite the fall and the subsequent medical timeout, Schuurs was able to continue playing after exchanging a high five with the ball girl. However, the pair ultimately lost the match 6-4, 6-4, ending their Wimbledon campaign in the quarter-finals.
This marks Schuurs' second consecutive quarter-final exit at a Grand Slam. Her best Grand Slam performance to date was reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2021.
