A 15-year-old German tennis player, Ida Wobker, was disqualified from the Wimbledon junior tournament on Saturday after her racket bounced into the stands during a first-round match. The incident led to an immediate code violation and automatic advancement for her opponent.
Wobker's disqualification occurred during the second set of her match against Maria Valentina Pop of Romania. Pop had won the first set 6-0, and the second set was tied at 5-5 when Wobker struck a shot out of bounds. In a display of frustration, she threw her racket, which then landed in the spectator area. While it was unclear if the racket made contact with any fans, officials determined the action warranted disqualification.
Pop was awarded the match and advanced to the next round, where she was later defeated by Daniella Britton.
Wobker, currently ranked 24th in the International Tennis Federation's junior world rankings, later addressed the incident on her Instagram Stories, stating, "S--- happens, you learn from it!" The International Tennis Federation's rules prohibit players from "violently or with anger hit[ing], kick[ing] or throw[ing] a racquet" during a tournament.
Prior to the outburst, Wobker had struggled with her performance in the match, recording 11 double faults and 44 unforced errors. Despite the setback, her age and ranking suggest potential for a continued career in professional tennis.
