White Sox Clinch ALDS Game 1 Victory Over Guardians on Stellar Bullpen Performance

The Chicago White Sox opened the American League Division Series with a 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, thanks to a dominant collective effort from their pitching staff and a crucial early home run.

Closer Grant Taylor was the standout performer, entering the game in the sixth inning and closing out the final four frames. His four-inning save was the longest outing of his career and the first of its kind in a postseason game since 2017. Taylor allowed just two hits and struck out six.

The White Sox employed a bullpen game to start the series. Lefty Hagen Smith began as the opener, retiring the first eight batters he faced before issuing three consecutive walks. Manager Will Venable turned to Bryan Hudson, who escaped the jam with a flyout.

Murakami's Homer Breaks the Tie

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Miguel Vargas led off with a single. First baseman Munetaka Murakami then launched his first career postseason home run, a 440-foot blast to right field, giving the White Sox a 2-0 lead.

Cleveland threatened in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs after starter Parker Messick walked Nathaniel Lowe and was replaced by Anthony Kay. Kay, however, allowed a double to Chase Bazzana and walked Austin Hedges before escaping the inning with a flyout.

Messick finished his outing after 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Daniel Espino took over for the Guardians and induced a double play to end the fifth.

White Sox Extend Lead

Chicago added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. With two outs and Kyle Teel on first base, Colson Montgomery hit a slow roller down the third-base line. Teel, not known for his speed, managed to score from first on the unconventional RBI groundout, making it 3-0. The play at the plate was close, but Teel narrowly avoided the tag.

Despite facing a two-run deficit, the Guardians' offense struggled to generate scoring opportunities. They managed just three hits and five walks throughout the game. The White Sox bullpen, with contributions from Hudson, Kay, and ultimately Taylor, held Cleveland scoreless for the final eight innings.

The White Sox will aim to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series on Sunday, while the Guardians will look to even the series at home.
