Wests Tigers player Adam Doueihi is expected to remain with the NRL club following a pivotal meeting with CEO Shaun Mielekamp. The discussion, which also included player agent Isaac Moses, was described as "very positive and productive" by Mielekamp.
"Adam will be at training now which is a very good sign," Mielekamp stated Monday. "what is really important is that what is said in that room stays in that room. That's important for us at a club. We're all doing what's best for the club."
The resolution addresses recent speculation surrounding a strained relationship between Doueihi and Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall. Reports had suggested Doueihi was considering leaving the club immediately, despite having signed a long-term contract extension earlier this year. Doueihi had reportedly threatened not to play for the team in a recent match against the Canberra Raiders following a disagreement with Marshall.
Footy pundits have commented on the situation. Queensland legend Billy Slater remarked that Doueihi's stance of refusing to play would be "baggage" for him moving forward. "To just say 'I'm not playing this weekend' ... it doesn't look good. When you're in a selfless team environment, they are not selfless team actions," Slater said. He added that such actions could negatively impact a player's reputation and the team environment.
The club's focus is now on moving forward with Doueihi actively participating in training, signaling a return to team cohesion.
