Wembanyama Explores Rugby's Team Spirit During Off-Season Training

NBA superstar Victor Wembanyama has described his off-season training with French second-tier rugby club Provence as an inspiring experience, highlighting the unity and camaraderie he observed.

Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4-inch French athlete, dedicated a fortnight to the French club, focusing on physical and mental strength. This follows a similar unconventional approach in 2025 when he trained with Shaolin monks in China.

Footage from his time with Provence shows Wembanyama participating in tackle drills, passing exercises, and line-outs. He was also seen in a pre-season friendly huddle with the team, towering over his teammates. He shared a dressing-room embrace with former England international Teimana Harrison, who now plays for Provence.

"It was a great experience, seeing the team spirit they have over there," Wembanyama stated. "It was very inspiring to see the relationship between team-mates, coaches and fans. The training was really hard, really good for stability, movement patterns and developing strength, but I am more grateful for the experience of how I was welcomed there.

"I have never been welcomed anywhere like this. I wasn't part of the team but they treated me like I was. I want to do it again."

San Antonio Spurs teammate Harrison Barnes also joined Wembanyama on the trip.

Alongside his rugby training, Wembanyama hosted his Hoop Gambit event in his hometown of Le Chesnay, combining chess and basketball games. Wembanyama's Spurs recently concluded their NBA season, losing 4-1 to the New York Knicks in the NBA Championship finals in June.

Provence, a club that has previously featured Welsh internationals George North and Tomas Francis, has started their season strongly, winning their first five league matches as they pursue promotion to the Top 14.
