Wayne Rooney Pursues Punditry for Purpose, May Not Return to Management

Wayne Rooney has revealed that his pursuit of a punditry career is driven by a need for purpose rather than financial gain, and he is open to the possibility of never managing again. The former Manchester United and England star discussed his career transition in the new Disney+ documentary, 'The Real Rooneys'.

Rooney has become an established pundit for the BBC's Match of the Day and received praise for his direct commentary during the recent World Cup held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He joined the iconic football program at the beginning of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

His move into broadcasting followed unsuccessful stints in management, including short spells in charge of Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle. Rooney stated, "I'm not doing it for money I'm doing it for a purpose rather than just being at the house all day." He added, "There's a possibility I'll never manage again so moving forward."

Rooney's final managerial role was at Plymouth, where he was dismissed in December with the club at the bottom of the Championship standings. This followed a period of poor results, with the team securing only four wins and suffering 13 defeats in 23 league games.

Reflecting on losing the Plymouth job, Rooney told his wife Coleen that he was realistic about the situation. "No I'm a realist I think you know as a player when your career is going to end and you can prepare for that," he explained. "So the next stage in management for instance you don't know whether you'll be there a year, two years, 10 years or 3 months. You're not prepared when you lose the job."

He expressed his enjoyment of his current role, stating, "I'm enjoying Match of the Day and it's time to learn and get better at what I'm doing." During the World Cup, Rooney also entertained viewers with his candid remarks, notably describing the tournament's half-time show as "c***" and stating that "the best part was when it finished."
