Ollie Watkins returned to Aston Villa training on Monday and has apologized to his teammates for missing the team's recent 4-0 defeat to Brighton. Despite his apology, the England forward is still expected to depart for Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, as Villa have previously turned down multiple offers for him but the player is reportedly keen on the move.
Villa manager Unai Emery offered a brief and somewhat frosty response when questioned about Watkins' absence from the Premier League opener. When asked if the striker had refused to play, Emery suggested that inquiries be directed to Watkins or his agent for a response. "This question is for him. I can answer only with my silence," Emery stated.
In parallel with the speculation surrounding Watkins, Aston Villa has initiated contact with AC Milan regarding a potential transfer for Portuguese international Rafael Leao. The Birmingham club is reportedly exploring the financial aspects of a deal for the 27-year-old winger, who has recently been linked with Turkish clubs and has also been on the radar of several Champions League teams this summer.
Emery is understood to be seeking reinforcements for his attacking lineup, particularly after Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea. Rogers marked his Premier League debut for the Blues with a goal in their recent 3-2 victory over Fulham.
Aston Villa has also shown long-standing interest in Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson and previously had a bid for Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta rejected. The club has also continued discussions with Club Brugge concerning defender Joel Ordonez.
