The Washington Commanders' offense faces a significant setback as star left tackle Laremy Tunsil will be sidelined indefinitely following a torn triceps injury. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Monday that Tunsil will undergo surgery for the injury, which occurred during a Saturday practice.
"It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, and especially a great player like LT," Quinn said. "He is an absolutely fantastic teammate, and he’ll be missed. We certainly can’t wait to get him back."
The 32-year-old Tunsil suffered the injury during an individual drill while working against pass rusher Odafe Oweh. He immediately went down and was attended to by the training staff.
Tunsil, a five-time Pro Bowler, signed a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension in March, making him the highest-paid tackle in the NFL at the time, and the first lineman to earn $30 million annually. He has been a key component of the Commanders' offensive line since being acquired last season, playing in 14 games.
"He is really on the top of his game right now," Quinn stated. "Both in the run and pass, this is an equally strong player, and so it’s a big deal."
With Tunsil out, the Commanders plan to shift Brandon Coleman to left tackle. Coleman, who started 12 games at left tackle as a rookie in 2024 and made three starts there last year, is considered ready for the increased role. "He’s played a lot of winning football at left tackle here, and we know that he’s ready for it," Quinn said. "He’s put in an excellent offseason, and the team is very confident in him."
Veteran Andrew Wylie will remain in his backup swing tackle position. Quinn indicated that the team does not currently plan to seek external help in free agency, having consulted with general manager Adam Peters.
