Wardley Embraces Underdog Role Ahead of Dubois Rematch

Fabio Wardley is embracing the underdog status heading into his rematch with Daniel Dubois, stating it feels more natural and frees him from the pressure of being a recognized world champion.

Their first encounter saw Dubois knocked down early but ultimately stop Wardley in the first bout for Wardley's WBO belt. Wardley, a businessman and disrupter in the ring, believes this psychological shift can help him achieve a different outcome.

"I've always been regarded as the underdog since I turned professional," Wardley said. "I love it. Honestly, it's great. It feels more natural for me. Weightless."

He added that while being a world champion with an undefeated record against a strong opponent like Dubois carried significant weight, he now feels "free of pressure." Wardley noted that the public perception has shifted, with expectations leaning towards him losing, a position he finds more comfortable. "I'm the challenger and I'm the chaser. But for me it's just... 'Ah, this is it'. This is the nice bit I enjoy and still love however many years I've been on my way up. It feels great."

Wardley believes a relaxed fighter is more comfortable and confident, which is always beneficial. He observed how the dynamic shifted in their first fight, with sudden pronouncements of his imminent victory preceding his loss. "Seemingly for me it's better being underdog."

When informed of Wardley's perspective, Daniel Dubois responded with a similar sentiment. "Tell you the truth, I also prefer being the underdog," Dubois stated. "That's how we are. Like being backs to the wall and coming out biting. That's always my mentality. Champion or not."
