Wakefield Trinity Reach Super League Grand Final After Dramatic Reinvigoration

Wakefield Trinity has reached the Super League Grand Final for the first time, a prospect once considered a "pipe dream" but now a reality after a stunning 33-6 victory over the treble-chasing Wigan Warriors in the semi-final.
The club, which will face Warrington Wolves in the championship match on October 3rd, has undergone a significant transformation in recent seasons. Having been relegated from the top flight in 2023, their fortunes shifted with the completion of a takeover by kitchen magnate Matt Ellis. This financial backing, combined with the leadership of head coach Daryl Powell, has propelled Wakefield from the Championship division back to the pinnacle of the sport.
Tom Johnstone, an England winger who rejoined Wakefield after a spell with Catalans Dragons, reflected on the club's journey. "It's something I've dreamed about for years and it used to be a bit of a pipe dream," Johnstone said.
Johnstone described a meeting with Ellis at his kitchen factory, where the owner outlined his vision for the club. "We left and said: 'If they do any of that, it's going to be something special.' I couldn't say no," Johnstone stated, having scored two tries in the semi-final win against Wigan. The club's rapid ascent from the second tier in 2024 to within 80 minutes of a Super League championship underscores the dramatic reinvigoration experienced by Wakefield Trinity.
