Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe has publicly addressed and refuted rumors that he resisted a potential position change. Speaking to reporters before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Volpe stated that discussions about him playing a different position only arose after infielder Jose Caballero was nearing a return from the injured list. He asserted that he is prepared to "do anything to help the team win."

Volpe expressed surprise at the emergence of a story alleging his refusal to move from shortstop. He recalled telling manager Aaron Boone during a previous player option period that he would play catcher if needed, emphasizing his commitment to the team's needs. "I'd do literally whatever the team needed, and that's the truth," Volpe was quoted as saying, according to The Athletic.

His comments come after a period where his defensive performance has drawn attention. Despite being a Gold Glove winner in his rookie season in 2023, Volpe led the American League in errors last season. The 2026 season has presented challenges for the young shortstop, including a stint in the minor leagues following recovery from shoulder surgery. Volpe was scheduled to start at shortstop for the Yankees' game against the Rays on Wednesday.
