Vollering Claims Women's Road Race World Championship

Demi Vollering secured the women's road race world title in Montreal, continuing a dominant season for the Dutch cyclist. She emerged victorious after a challenging race, holding off Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney in the final kilometers.

This latest triumph adds to Vollering's impressive list of wins this year, which includes the Tour de France Femmes, Giro d'Italia Women, and several major one-day classics such as the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

"I can still not believe it. I worked so hard towards this goal, and it takes guts to truly believe in it with your whole heart," Vollering stated after her victory. The 29-year-old expressed the difficulty of the race, noting moments where she questioned her early attack but ultimately persevered. "I just dared, tried again and never gave up to the finish line."

Italian rider Elisa Longo Borghini claimed the bronze medal, narrowly beating world time-trial champion Marlen Reusser. The race was marked by a significant crash early on, involving 15 riders, including Great Britain's Flora Perkins. Defending champion Magdeleine Vallieres, Kimberley Le Court of Mauritius, and Spain's Paula Blasi were also caught in the incident and were forced to withdraw.

Vollering had launched an initial breakaway attempt with approximately 40 kilometers remaining, but the chasing pack managed to close the gap over the final two laps. In the decisive sprint to the finish line, Vollering and Niewiadoma-Phinney were neck and neck, with Vollering ultimately crossing first. The winning time was four hours, 45 minutes, and nine seconds.
