Viral World Cup Goalkeeper Laments Loss of Privacy
Cape Verde's Vozinha, who gained millions of followers, describes the 'dark side' of sudden global fame.

Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper for Cape Verde, has revealed the significant personal toll that viral fame has taken following his standout performances in the World Cup. Once an unknown player in the Portuguese second division, he emerged as a global phenomenon, accumulating nearly 30 million social media followers.
His newfound celebrity has drastically altered his daily life, turning simple activities like dining out into logistical challenges and leading to fans frequently gathering outside his mother's home. "I've lost my peace and tranquillity," Vozinha told The Observer. "I no longer have any privacy, or at least much less than I used to."
He described the constant attention, stating, "Now I go out, I go to a restaurant, and there’s always someone who wants to take a photo with me or asks me for an autograph. Or, worse, someone is filming me. That’s what has changed most in my life, and I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it."
Reflecting on his experience, Vozinha expressed a preference for his life before the tournament. "To be honest, if I were offered the life I have today or the life I had before, I’d choose the one I had before. A lot of people want to be famous and have a public profile, but they only see the positive side of that reality."
Cape Verde captured the world's attention during the World Cup, reaching the Round of 32 and taking eventual champions Argentina to extra time. As the smallest nation to ever compete in the tournament, their journey was marked by a distinct, spirited approach. Vozinha's performance was crucial, making seven saves in their opening match against Spain, a 0-0 draw, followed by similar efforts against Saudi Arabia and a 2-2 tie with Uruguay.
His social media following surged from approximately 50,000 followers before the tournament to nearly 30 million by its conclusion. He has since seen a slight decrease, now standing at just over 28 million followers. The goalkeeper has also been honored with a new species of sea slug being named after him and has signed for Chilean club Colo-Colo.
Recounting the initial shock of his viral status, Vozinha recalled a moment after the Spain game when a team catering staff member informed him of his massive follower count. "I had no idea what he was talking about; I thought he was joking, but he insisted," he said. Later, a journalist confirmed the numbers by showing him her phone.
To manage the overwhelming attention, Vozinha decided to disable his Instagram notifications. While acknowledging the numerous business and brand opportunities that have arisen, he has remained selective, opting for only one promotional collaboration during the competition. He stated a clear intention to avoid working with tobacco, alcohol, or betting brands in the future.
