Vinicius Junior Considered Arsenal Move Amid Aggressive Summer Pursuit
Real Madrid star's agents reveal the Premier League club made a significant approach, though the player's desire remains to stay at the Spanish giants.
Vinicius Junior seriously considered a move to Arsenal during the summer transfer window, with the Premier League club's pursuit described as "very aggressive" by his agents. Despite the strong interest from Arsenal, who reportedly offered a substantial weekly wage, the Brazilian forward's preference is to remain with Real Madrid, where he has spent the majority of his career.
Arsenal had approached Vinicius Junior, and reports indicated they were prepared to offer him approximately £18.5 million per season, a figure that would have made him the highest earner at the club. His contract with Real Madrid is set to expire at the end of the current season, fueling speculation about his future.
"Arsenal were very involved. They were very aggressive," said Michael Yormack, one of Vinicius Junior's agents, speaking to Sports Boom. "Vini’s heart is in Madrid, that’s where he’s always wanted to be, and that’s where he is, and that’s where he hopes to be for the rest of his career. I don't think there was ever a question."
He added, "Did he ever seriously consider Arsenal? I mean of course. When a team like Arsenal rolls out the red carpet for you and makes you feel really wanted, then obviously you have to listen."
Grant Veitch, another agent from Roc Nation Sports International, suggested that Vinicius Junior's comfort level and long-standing commitment to Real Madrid were key factors in his decision to stay. "With Vini, he went to Madrid at a very young age, and I think there’s an element of comfort, wanting to be there and wanting to build something at Real Madrid," Veitch stated. "There were other opportunities that arose. But I think the level of comfort he has, and him already being a star at Real Madrid, it kept him there, and he wanted to stay."
Since joining Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018, Vinicius Junior has achieved significant success, winning La Liga three times and the Champions League twice. He has made 386 appearances for the club and scored 129 goals.
Despite his achievements, contract negotiations have reportedly stalled, with the club indicating that Vinicius Junior may need to lower his wage demands for an extension to be agreed. Real Madrid is still reportedly willing to make him one of their joint-highest earners, potentially alongside Kylian Mbappé, who joined the club in 2024. The dynamics have shifted, with Mbappé's arrival impacting the salary structure and increasing speculation around Vinicius Junior's future.
Vinicius Junior has also been a target of racist abuse in Spain, with over 20 reported cases since his arrival. Despite the deeply personal impact of these incidents, he has publicly stated his intention to remain in La Liga, asserting that he does not want to concede ground to those perpetuating racism.
Former coach Jose Mourinho recently commented that he would have pushed for a move if he were in Vinicius Junior's position, suggesting a desire for a more respectful environment. However, Mourinho acknowledged the player's loyalty to Real Madrid and his enduring positive attitude. "He believes things can improve, and he still has that smile. Nothing and no one can take it away from him," Mourinho said. "He's a fantastic guy, and it's easy to get along with him."
