Viktor Stalberg Recounts Wild Trade Saga in Russian Hockey League

Former NHL player Viktor Stalberg has shared a peculiar story from his time in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) that involved a legendary coach, a threatened trade, and an unexpected reversal. Stalberg, who won the Stanley Cup with the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks, played for Avangard Omsk in the KHL, coached by Bob Hartley, a coach known for his intense style and prior Stanley Cup success with the Colorado Avalanche.

Stalberg described a period where his relationship with Hartley was strained, leading the coach to express a desire to waive him. His agent informed him that Hartley was unhappy and intended to bench him for the remainder of the season.

Amidst this tension, Stalberg requested a trade, even though he possessed a no-trade clause. A deal was reportedly struck with the Kunlun Red Star club. Stalberg communicated with the general manager and coach of the Kunlun Red Star, discussing his role on the power play.

However, the situation took an unusual turn. After preparing for the trade and packing his belongings, Stalberg arrived at the rink only to find that no one from Avangard Omsk mentioned the transaction. He returned home expecting to be contacted about his flight and next steps, but heard nothing.

Hours later, Stalberg's agent contacted him again with surprising news: the owner of Avangard Omsk had overruled Hartley, instructing him that Stalberg was staying with the team. This turn of events led to a period of uncertainty for Stalberg and his wife, with his status with the team changing rapidly from being traded to staying.

Despite the initial friction, Stalberg eventually found common ground with Hartley, and the coach even expressed interest in having him return for the following season. Ultimately, Stalberg signed with the Swiss team Fribourg-Gotteron HC for the subsequent season.
