The Minnesota Vikings have suspended defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander for three weeks following his guilty plea to driving while intoxicated. The suspension, which began July 24 and concludes August 13, will not impact the regular season.
Alexander entered his plea earlier this month, stemming from an incident in April. The team announced the disciplinary action on Tuesday.
"Following Gerald's arrest earlier this spring, we remained in communication with the NFL while awaiting the outcome of the legal process," the Vikings said in a statement. "We take these situations seriously and believe this disciplinary action is appropriate."
Alexander, who joined the Vikings in the offseason, released a statement expressing accountability. "I take full responsibility for the situation I put myself in and apologize for not meeting the mark," Alexander stated. "I know it's unacceptable. I understand the suspension and am committed to learning from the matter and ensuring I come back a better version of myself."
Alexander was hired by Minnesota to reunite with defensive coordinator Brian Flores, with whom he previously worked at the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers.
