Victor Wembanyama Restricts American Media Access Post-Finals Loss
San Antonio Spurs star reportedly 'locked in' on new season, avoiding interviews except for '60 Minutes'.
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is reportedly unwilling to discuss the team's NBA Championship defeat in June and is limiting his interactions with American media.
According to ESPN NBA reporter Michael C. Wright, Wembanyama is "locked in" on the upcoming season and has declined interviews with most American outlets, with "60 Minutes" being the exception. Wright suggested the finals loss "affected him in a way," noting that Wembanyama "sincerely believed that the Spurs would win" and were the better team.
The Spurs lost the championship to the New York Knicks in a 4-1 series, with San Antonio squandering double-digit leads in every game. Game 4 saw the largest comeback in NBA Finals history, as the Knicks overcame a 29-point deficit to win 107-106.
Wembanyama himself acknowledged the impact of the loss during the Spurs' media day earlier in October. He admitted to having "hard emotions" and "hard to find sleep sometimes" during the offseason as he revisited the series defeat. However, he stated, "you accept that you have to go through it and you have to feel all of it."
He described his offseason recovery process, which included spending time with teammates in Paris for workouts and a personal trip that he called "pretty emotional." Following the team sessions, Wembanyama trained with French rugby club Provence Rugby to enhance his footing, lower-body strength, and ability to withstand physical contact. This follows a pattern of unconventional training, as he spent two weeks at the Shaolin Temple in China the previous offseason.
During the NBA Finals, Wembanyama averaged 26 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks against the Knicks. The Spurs' media day statements indicated a focus on moving forward and preparing for the challenges of the upcoming 100-plus game season.
