Victor Wembanyama Rejects Villain Label, Reflects on NBA Finals Lessons
The Spurs star acknowledges crossing lines in his competitive approach but insists he was not focused on public perception during the championship series.
Victor Wembanyama, a rising star in the NBA, has addressed the public perception shift he experienced during the 2026 NBA Finals, where he was increasingly portrayed as a villain by some fans and media. Despite leading the San Antonio Spurs to the Finals against the New York Knicks, Wembanyama stated in a recent "60 Minutes" interview that he did not pay attention to these labels during the series.
"No, it didn't because I'm not paying attention to this... during the Finals. I don't think any player on either team really is," Wembanyama said when asked about the portrayal.
The perception shift followed several on-court incidents, including an elbow that made contact with Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves during the Western Conference semifinals, and perceived aggressive defense against Jalen Brunson in the Finals.
While Wembanyama was a finalist for MVP and earned Defensive Player of the Year and an All-NBA selection in his third season, the postseason narrative focused on his intensity. He acknowledged that this playoff run taught him about the boundaries of competitive play.
"It showed my limits more than anything else. Going out there, you need to play basketball. You don't need to beat the s--- out of people. [laughs] If you wanna win, at least," Wembanyama reflected. He admitted that he crossed a line at times during the demanding playoff stretch.
Beyond on-court actions, Wembanyama also drew attention for standing with his arms crossed during the U.S. national anthem before Game 1 of the Finals. He has not provided a public explanation for this action, and he was reportedly not present on the court for the anthems before subsequent games.
Wembanyama has been a consistent presence for the Spurs this season, participating in all five of their regular-season games and averaging 25 points per game. The Spurs are scheduled to play the Timberwolves next on Saturday.
