Victor Wembanyama has signed a five-year contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs worth $252 million, ensuring the young star remains with the franchise.

The deal is the maximum rookie-scale extension allowed, including a player option for the fifth season. Wembanyama opted for the 25% maximum salary rather than the 30% supermax, a decision that reportedly saves the Spurs approximately $51 million.

"Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes," Wembanyama posted on X earlier on July 10, 2026, hinting at the agreement.

The 7-foot-4 center was a transformative force for the Spurs in his rookie season, leading them to the NBA Finals, where they ultimately lost to the New York Knicks in five games. Wembanyama acknowledged the pain of the loss, calling it the "biggest lesson of my life" and emphasizing the team's need to eliminate significant downswings in performance.

"The margin for error is very thin," Wembanyama stated after the Finals. "Our domination stints are absolute. We absolutely dominated for most of the series. But our errors, our mistakes are punished so hard that we can't have ups and downs like this so much, you know? The ups are OK. The downs are the reason we lost."

During the Finals, Wembanyama became a target for some New York fans, who threw an egg at his hotel and directed taunts at him during games. He appeared to embrace the role of an antagonist, engaging with opponents on the court.

Drafted with the first overall pick in 2023, Wembanyama's impact has been immediate. The Spurs finished the 2025-2026 regular season with a 62-20 record, securing the second seed in the Western Conference. The team also boasts promising young talent, including rookies Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, who showed significant development in their first NBA campaigns.
