Verstappen Leads at F1's Return to Sepang Track for Bahrain Grand Prix

Max Verstappen of Red Bull set the fastest time during the first practice session as Formula 1 returned to the Sepang track in Malaysia for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Verstappen's best lap was 0.383 seconds quicker than George Russell of Mercedes.

Following Verstappen, the second Red Bull car driven by Isack Hadjar was third fastest, 0.783 seconds behind. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc secured fourth, with Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes separating him from teammate Lewis Hamilton. Pierre Gasly of Alpine finished seventh, followed by Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls.

Both Hadjar and Lindblad are expected to receive grid penalties for using too many engine parts. Hadjar is anticipated to face a five-place penalty.

The Formula 1 circuit's return to Sepang marks the first time the track has hosted a Grand Prix in nine years. The venue is considered one of the more effective layouts among circuits that debuted in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The decision to hold the race in Malaysia arose from calendar disruptions earlier in the year, specifically the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races due to the conflict in the Middle East. Bahrain's desire to still host their event led to negotiations that resulted in the race taking place in Malaysia. The event will feature Bahrain-themed activities, and the podium ceremony will include the Bahrain Grand Prix trophy, with rosewater replacing champagne.

Drivers noted significant tyre degradation during the first session, attributing it to the abrasive nature of the track surface. George Russell specifically commented on the high tyre wear experienced by his Mercedes. When questioning his tyre wear during a race simulation, he was informed it appeared to be an anomaly compared to Verstappen's performance.

Mercedes has introduced its first substantial upgrade since the Canadian Grand Prix, including a new floor and rear bodywork. The team had anticipated McLaren to be the strongest contender at this track, but McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris finished the first session in 11th and 12th positions, respectively.
