USC is set to kick off its 2026 football season in Week 0 against San Jose State, offering an early glimpse of the Trojans' potential. Head Coach Lincoln Riley conveyed his enthusiasm for starting the season ahead of schedule, stating, “I’m glad we’re playing Week 0. I’m glad we don’t have to wait another week.”

The Trojans are looking to rebound after a 7-6 record in 2025, a season that followed an opening win against then-No. 13 LSU. Conventional wisdom suggests USC needs to make the College Football Playoff in 2026 to meet expectations. Riley, however, has expressed strong confidence in the team's alignment for a successful season.

Several key storylines will unfold during the opener at the Coliseum.

Heisman Aspirations for Maiava

Quarterback Jayden Maiava has an opportunity to make an early statement for the Heisman Trophy against an expectedly overmatched San Jose State defense. Coach Riley is looking for Maiava to build upon his progress from the previous year. A dominant performance could allow backup quarterbacks Jonas Williams and Sam Huard to see action in the fourth quarter.

Patterson's Defensive Scheme

The return of former longtime TCU coach Gary Patterson as a defensive coordinator is a significant storyline. His efforts to construct a formidable defense will be under scrutiny. Questions remain about whether his new scheme will still resemble the effective 4-2-5 formation from his previous tenure. Riley noted that the players have adapted to Patterson's intense coaching style, acknowledging the positive impact of his demanding approach on the practice field.

Integrating New Talent

USC is expected to start as many as five true freshmen against San Jose State, with an additional 13 freshmen listed as potential contributors. Freshmen Mark Bowman (tight end), Trent Mosley, Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, and Ethan “Boobie” Feaster (wide receivers) are slated to start. Sophomore wide receiver Tanook Hines is still recovering from an offseason medical procedure, creating opportunities for other receivers to establish themselves early.

Running Back Depth

The return of running back Waymond Jordan from an ankle injury that ended his 2025 season provides USC with a strong backfield duo. Jordan, along with King Miller, who has increased his muscle mass, could encourage a more run-heavy offensive strategy. The veteran offensive line, now featuring Tobias Raymond at center following Kilian O’Connor’s season-ending injury, is expected to support the running game effectively.

Kicker Caden Chittenden's Return

Kicker Caden Chittenden, who transferred to USC after a standout freshman season at UNLV in 2024, is set to handle field goals. He suffered a season-ending injury before playing his first game for the Trojans. Despite Ryon Sayeri setting a single-season school record with 21 field goals in 2025, Chittenden worked to reclaim his starting role. Sayeri will manage kickoff duties.
