A competitor at the US Open is facing criticism for alleged unsportsmanlike conduct after a match on Saturday. Anastasia Potapova, who was born in Russia and now represents Austria, defeated American Amanda Anisimova in straight sets to advance to the fourth round. Following the handshake at the net and her celebration, Potapova was captured on camera appearing to wave sarcastically in Anisimova's direction.

Social media users reacted strongly to the apparent gesture, with many calling it a lack of respect. One viewer commented, "Tell me that Potapova didn't just do what I think I saw her do, that would be a total lack of respect." Another user stated, "I've rewatched it a few times and can't imagine it being anything other than Potapova rudely waving and saying 'bye bye' to Anisimova." A third added, "Is this behavior typical of Potapova? I understand the moment getting to you but don't think there's much excuse for this."

The match marked a frustrating end to the tournament for Anisimova, who was unable to capitalize on multiple opportunities. She converted only three of her 16 break-point chances and ultimately lost the match with a score of 6-2, 7-5.

Potapova, 25, secured her spot in the fourth round by converting six of eight break points. This performance matches her best Grand Slam result to date. She is set to play against No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva in her next match.

Anisimova has had a mixed record in Grand Slam tournaments this year. In 2025, she reached the finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open, but was eliminated in the third round of the last three majors. Her best performance this year was reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
