Home plate umpire Bill Miller had a night to forget at Wrigley Field on Friday, going 0-for-8 on automated ball-strike system (ABS) challenges during the Cincinnati Reds' 10-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs. This marks what is believed to be the worst performance by an umpire on ABS challenges since the system's introduction at the start of the 2026 MLB season, according to data compiled by TapToChallenge.com.

All eight of the challenged calls—five by the Cubs and three by the Reds—were overturned. The first such reversal came early in the game when Miller initially called a pitch from Reds pitcher Rhett Lowder a ball, but an ABS challenge confirmed it was within the strike zone.

The Cubs' catcher Carson Kelly initiated four challenges, while Reds catcher Jose Trevino successfully challenged two calls. Two additional reversals came from batters: Sal Stewart of the Reds and Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs each won a challenge.

This difficult outing for Miller comes as the league continues to integrate the ABS challenge system. While some players and analysts have praised the system for increasing accuracy, individual umpire performances under the system can draw significant attention. Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, who leads the majors in successful challenges this season, opted not to challenge any calls during Friday's game.

Miller has been involved in notable plays previously this season. Last month, during a Reds game, infielder Edwin Arroyo collided with Miller while trying to field a ground ball. A hot-mic moment captured Reds reliever Caleb Ferguson directing expletive-laden remarks at Miller following the play, for which Ferguson later apologized, calling his actions unprofessional.

Miller's 70 overturned calls this season place him ninth among MLB umpires in that category. Hunter Wendelstedt leads the league in overturned calls.

The victory improved the Reds' standing while the Cubs' bullpen struggled to hold off Cincinnati's late rally. The game itself was decided in the later innings, with the Reds ultimately securing the win.
