UK Sports Secretary Urges Swift Resolution to Manchester City Financial Charges

Sports Secretary Lisa Nandy has called for the financial cheating claims against Manchester City to be resolved "as quickly as possible," emphasizing that the Premier League and the club should reach a speedy conclusion.
Nandy stated that the controversy surrounding the charges, which originally date back to 2023, is "really destabilizing" for fans of Manchester City and football in general. She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the Premier League "needs to sort this out and sort this out quickly," while acknowledging that City "strongly contests the charges, and there is still some way to go with the process."
Her comments come amid concerns that the dispute could continue for several more years, particularly with expected appeals from Manchester City and potential compensation claims from rival clubs. It was recently revealed that Manchester City has been found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges of breaching financial rules laid out by the Premier League.
Potential sanctions for the club could range from a points deduction to expulsion from the league, or a significant fine. Christian Purslow, former managing director of Liverpool and chief executive of Aston Villa, expressed hope for a resolution that "tries to draw a line in the sand," warning that "a never-ending waterfall of legal claims and uncertainties for another four or five years would be absolutely appalling for the game."
Nandy reiterated that it is "not in the interest of the game for it to drag on," stressing the need for fans to believe in the fairness and integrity of the sport. She clarified that the UK government would not be directly involved in the dispute, as football sets its own rules. The government's role, she added, has been to introduce a football regulator to protect the sport, rather than interfere in individual decisions. The government's priority is to ensure the matter is "resolved properly and as quickly as possible for the sake of the fans."
