Ugandan international footballer David Owori, 27, has died after being beaten while attempting to fight off muggers in Kampala, Uganda's capital. The incident occurred Tuesday night near Owori's home, according to police.
Witnesses reported that a group of assailants attacked Owori, striking him with paving stones as they attempted to steal his phone and other belongings. The footballer was left unconscious and was rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to a private facility in the city, where he died on Wednesday.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye confirmed that the player was ambushed by thugs, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that the scene of the incident was documented and processed for evidence.
Owori, a right-back and midfielder, was a prominent figure in Ugandan football. He was known for his tactical ability and versatility. In 2024, he was instrumental in leading Sports Club (SC) Villa to their first league title in 20 years, their 17th top-flight trophy. His contract with SC Villa was extended until at least 2027.
He also represented Uganda's national team, The Cranes, and was part of the squad during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying stages, with many expecting him to be called up for future tournaments.
The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) described Owori as a "true leader on and off the pitch" and an "inspiration to a generation." The national team lamented the loss of a star who "carried the hopes of a nation."
Uganda's parliament observed a moment of silence on Wednesday and called for a swift investigation into Owori's death.
