UCLA Survives Oregon Scare Despite Quarterback Injury, Fan Outrage Over Hit

No. 21 UCLA narrowly defeated No. 13 Oregon 17-15 on Saturday, maintaining their undefeated season despite a significant injury to starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava. The victory, however, was overshadowed by a controversial second-quarter hit by Oregon defensive tackle Bear Alexander, which drew ire from fans and raised questions about player safety.

Controversy on the Field

The play in question involved Alexander twisting Iamaleava's facemask before appearing to punch him in the back of the head as they fell to the turf. Oregon linebacker Jerry Mixon also landed on Iamaleava's legs during the tackle, leading to concerns about an ankle injury for the UCLA quarterback. Following the incident, social media erupted with calls for Alexander to be suspended, with some fans deeming the play "dirty" and "perhaps one of the dirtiest plays seen in 2026."

Injury and Backup Performance

Iamaleava attempted to return to the game but was ultimately replaced by backup Ty Dieffenbach in the second half. UCLA coach Bob Chesney stated that Iamaleava "wasn't close to being able to come back today" and that further evaluation would be necessary.

Before his injury, Iamaleava, a highly touted transfer from Tennessee who led the Volunteers to a College Football Playoff berth in 2024, completed 10 of 17 passes for 162 yards, but also threw two interceptions. Dieffenbach finished the game with 43 yards and a touchdown pass.

Chesney did not definitively name Dieffenbach as the full-time backup, noting that Madden Iamaleava, Nico's brother, would also be involved in the quarterback rotation. The coaching staff opted for Dieffenbach during the game, recognizing his effectiveness in practice with designed quarterback runs.

Game Recap

The game was marked by numerous turnovers, with Oregon committing seven and UCLA having three. UCLA running back Wayne Knight was a key performer, rushing for 103 yards on 22 carries and scoring a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 12 yards, including a fourth-quarter touchdown reception from Dieffenbach that extended UCLA's lead.

Oregon attempted a late comeback, with Evan Stewart scoring on a 44-yard pass to narrow the deficit to 17-15. However, UCLA's defense stifled Oregon's two-point conversion attempt and a subsequent final drive, securing the win.

Oregon's quarterback situation was also in flux, with Dylan Raiola starting in place of Dante Moore, who remains in concussion protocol. Raiola struggled, completing only six of 18 passes for 43 yards and throwing two interceptions before being replaced by Brock Thomas. UCLA's defense has been a strength this season, leading the nation in interceptions.
