Tulsa Receiver Makes Improbable Touchdown Catch After Tipping Ball to Himself
David Wells Jr. turned a broken play into a highlight-reel score against Navy.
Tulsa wide receiver David Wells Jr. executed a remarkable play for a touchdown against Navy, catching his own tipped pass for a score. The improbable play occurred in the first quarter with the game tied at 7, near Navy's 10-yard line.
Quarterback Baylor Hayes attempted a backward pass to Oran Singleton Jr., who was tackled several yards behind the line of scrimmage. Singleton managed to escape the tackle and threw a pass towards the end zone. Wells Jr., also a receiver, tipped the ball backward to himself, caught it outside the end zone, and then ran it in for the touchdown, giving Tulsa a lead.
Singleton later caught a touchdown of his own to extend Tulsa's lead to 26-14 in the second half. Tulsa entered the game with a 3-2 record, while Navy had struggled after a successful 11-2 season the previous year, entering Saturday's contest with more losses than the entirety of the prior season.
