England manager Thomas Tuchel did not conceal his anger towards defender Djed Spence during the team's second World Cup match against Ghana, a game that ended in a goalless draw. The Three Lions, following a victory over Croatia, struggled to break down a compact Ghanaian defense, resulting in a single point from the fixture.
Footage from the second half revealed Tuchel shouting Spence's name multiple times while the ball was in play. Spence, who was making his World Cup debut at left-back, appeared confused by the instructions and gestured with his arms. Tuchel responded with an agitated "Give and go!"
Spence was eventually substituted in the 66th minute and replaced by Nico O'Reilly. Despite the managerial criticism, Spence was noted to have had a solid performance in his World Cup debut.
Tuchel was reserved when speaking to the press after the match, acknowledging the difficulty of the game. "We knew it would be difficult," he stated. "They went even more defensive than in the first match – they defended in a 4-5-1. We found our intensity the longer the half went but we couldn't get the reward."
He also noted the team's defensive efforts against counter-attacks. When asked about potential changes for the upcoming match against Panama, Tuchel replied, "I have no idea. Panama is in four days."
Tuchel's high standards for the team reflect their ambition to win the World Cup, a title they have not secured in 60 years. The draw against Ghana serves as a reality check for the squad as they progress through the tournament.
