Thomas Tuchel has defended his tactical decisions following England's World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, stating the subsequent criticism felt disproportionate to the team's overall achievements. Speaking after England secured a third-place finish with a 6-4 victory over France in Miami, Tuchel compared the intense scrutiny to exiting the tournament in the group stage.
"The press conference yesterday felt as if we went out in group stage without a win, to be very honest," Tuchel said. "Twenty-four hours later we had our biggest success in 60 years. I think the low and the drama about what happened against Argentina was too low, but that's part of it."
England's semi-final defeat saw them eliminated after a 2-1 loss to Argentina. Tuchel, the head coach, faced criticism from supporters, former players, and media for his tactical changes during that match. He fiercely defended his choices, emphasizing that his interventions were made with a clear plan.
"My decisions, my interventions, my substitutions, the change of structure. It did not have the effect that I wanted, so I have to live with this," Tuchel acknowledged. "It’s very painful for me because I did it in good faith. I did it with a clear plan and a clear idea behind it. It didn't work out so I take the blame and the responsibility."
Despite the pain of the semi-final loss, Tuchel highlighted the team's resilience in clinching the bronze medal, their best World Cup finish since 1966. He believes the experience, even with its difficult moments, will benefit the squad moving forward.
"This game will help us, for sure," he stated. "Even if a part of you will never allow you to fully celebrate your bronze medal, I think this is a very important one. I hope the players can be proud in time."
Tuchel also addressed the situation with forward Bukayo Saka, who scored a hat-trick in the third-place playoff win against France. Saka, despite insisting he was fit, did not feature in the starting lineup against Argentina. Tuchel explained his decision was based on a feeling that Morgan Rogers might be involved in something special during the semi-final, adding that Saka's status as a key player was never in doubt.
"Bukayo showed he was a key player, that was never a doubt," Tuchel said. "I was not even aware he had a hat-trick [against France]. I lost the overview of the goalscorers."
Looking ahead, Tuchel stressed the need for the team to improve their performance under pressure, manage games more effectively, and make better decisions. He pointed to instances like the first half against Croatia, where conceding just before halftime highlighted areas for improvement.
"We need to play better football under pressure. We need to manage games better under pressure. We need to take better decisions under pressure. We need to defend more economically, more disciplined," Tuchel stated. "These are exact moments where we need to be better and understand how to be better. That’s our job for the next steps."
