Tuchel Defends Alexander-Arnold Snub Amidst England's Loss to Spain

Trent Alexander-Arnold remains on the sidelines for England, with his absence from the squad extending to 477 days as of the recent match against Spain. Manager Thomas Tuchel faced questions about the decision to overlook the Real Madrid right-back, particularly in a game where England ultimately fell 3-2.

Tuchel opted for Jarell Quansah, a player typically a center-back, in the right-back position. When pressed on why Alexander-Arnold's technical qualities were not utilized, especially in pursuit of an equalizer, Tuchel cited defensive responsibilities. "There was a lot of defending to do as well. One-on-one defending," Tuchel stated. He explained that Quansah's speed and ability to operate as a central defender were factors in his selection. "We needed Jarell’s speed and Jarell’s quality to think also as a central defender. Jarell did excellent."

When asked about the specific game scenario in which Alexander-Arnold would be utilized, Tuchel was non-committal, stating, "We have three more games. I have a choice to make for 11 players and for five subs. Nothing else." He further elaborated that the decision came down to selecting Jarell Quansah to remain on the pitch.

Alexander-Arnold's last appearance for England was on June 7, 2025, as a substitute in a 1-0 victory over Andorra. His last start was on October 13, 2024, in a 3-1 win against Finland, where he scored a 25-yard free-kick. Despite England trailing 3-2 in the match against Spain, Alexander-Arnold watched from the bench as other substitutes, Morgan Gibbs-White, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Jarrad Branthwaite, were introduced.

Critics often point to Alexander-Arnold's defensive frailties, but his supporters highlight his significant offensive contributions, including six assists for Liverpool in Champions League quarter-final and semi-final matches. Tuchel appears to have concerns regarding his tracking of opposition players.

England conceded three goals in the match against Spain. Two of those goals stemmed from errors in possession by Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly. The third involved a collective defensive lapse where Quansah, Guehi, and Ezri Konsa failed to adequately track a passing sequence that led to Spain's winning goal. Ben White has had past issues with international duty, and Tino Livramento withdrew from the current squad. These factors led to Quansah being chosen over Alexander-Arnold for the right-back role.

Alexander-Arnold's club form has also seen limited starts for Real Madrid this season, contributing to a potential lack of confidence. His continued omission from the England lineup, and specifically being an unused substitute against Spain, is unlikely to have bolstered his morale. His opportunity to feature in the upcoming match against Czechia remains to be seen, but many believe he should be given a chance to play.
