Tuchel Critical of Palmer's Frequent Absences from England Squad

England manager Thomas Tuchel has stated that Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer misses "too many" national team camps after the player withdrew from the latest squad. Palmer pulled out on Monday morning, despite having featured in all five of Chelsea's Premier League matches this season, with reports indicating he is managing a minor injury.

England is scheduled to face Spain, followed by matches against Czechia and Croatia. Tuchel's comments come after he did not select Palmer for the previous World Cup, and speaking at Wembley Stadium, he suggested the player has a "point to prove."

"My understanding is he plays with discomfort and pain and cannot compete at the highest level with discomfort and pain so he withdrew and informed us and Chelsea informed us," Tuchel said. "We are not managing load. It is a competitive environment, where the players love to be, they love to train and be with each other, that's what togetherness and brotherhood looks like and that's what we created.

"We will never compromise on that. We will never let this creep in that we have the feeling players don't want to come. It's fair enough, but we will focus on the guys who absolutely want to play for England."

Tuchel continued: "For sure it is another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities. And I don't blame him for it, it's just the fact he misses way too many camps with injuries and I only want to rely on what I personally witness and what I see with my team, and for that you have to be in camp. If you are not in camp, there is a next level to impress that you cannot achieve because you can only do it when you are with me on the pitch. It is a missed opportunity."

Despite descriptions of Palmer having a muscular issue, his withdrawal is likely to reignite debates about club versus country commitments. Palmer's decision follows Tuchel's earlier warning upon recalling him to the squad last week.

"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it's another thing to perform for England," Tuchel had stated. "Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination."

He added: "So now it is a new competition. Some players, some positions, have more injuries. Some have less injuries. Cole has his starts that he always had but he has his numbers back - he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back - so that is why he is in the squad."

Tuchel believes Palmer "has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent (Alexander-Arnold)." He noted that Alexander-Arnold "was never off the list. He was never non-selectable for us, and it is his chance to show, come to camp and be the best version of himself."

Palmer has recorded four goals and two assists in seven appearances this season, a marked improvement after a previous campaign hampered by injuries. He battled thigh and hamstring problems, finishing the last season with 11 goals and three assists in 34 games. Last week, Palmer shared his frustration, stating, "I had one leg for 10 months, f***ing hell, what do you want me to do?"

Other players who have withdrawn from the current England squad include Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Tino Livramento, and Marcus Rashford.
