Troy Aikman Weighs Leaving Broadcasting Amid ESPN Contract Dispute
The NFL legend expressed uncertainty about his future in broadcasting, citing a public fallout with ESPN and his broadcast partner, Joe Buck.
Troy Aikman has stated there is a "50-50 chance" he may not return to broadcasting next season, as his contract with ESPN nears its end. The uncertainty follows a public dispute with his on-air partner, Joe Buck, and the company itself.
Aikman's potential departure comes after Buck signed a new multi-year contract extension with ESPN in September, a deal Aikman reportedly was not informed of prior to its announcement. This lack of communication has led to a public falling out between the broadcast partners, who have worked together for 25 seasons.
In comments made at a book signing in Dallas, Aikman described Buck's contract situation as an "ultimate act of betrayal." He noted that the industry typically involves broadcast partners being informed about each other's contract negotiations or being signed in tandem.
The landscape for top NFL broadcasting roles appears limited. Fox Sports has Tom Brady as its lead commentator and Greg Olsen as a strong second option. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" booth features Cris Collinsworth, who is under contract through the 2029-30 season. Amazon Prime recently extended Kirk Herbstreit's deal, and CBS has named J.J. Watt as its primary analyst.
This situation might leave Netflix as a potential option for Aikman, given the streaming service's practice of utilizing rotating commentators for special international and holiday games. For example, Luke Kuechly recently served in this capacity alongside Noah Eagle for a game in Melbourne.
Beyond broadcasting, Aikman also addressed the possibility of rejoining his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, in a non-playing capacity. He described his relationship with team owner Jerry Jones as "complicated" but "built, I believe, on respect." Aikman indicated he would be open to discussing potential opportunities with Jones if he felt he could contribute to the team's success.
