Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio sustained significant injuries after crashing into the back of a support vehicle during Stage 19 of the Tour de France.
The incident occurred on the Alpe d'Huez climb when the vehicle ahead of Rubio was forced to brake suddenly. According to a team spokesperson, a spectator fell directly into the path of the support car, prompting the emergency stop. Rubio, who was riding behind the vehicle, was unable to avoid the collision.
Rubio was treated for his injuries, which included requiring 20 stitches to his face. He spent an hour in the medical tent and was subsequently transported by helicopter to a hospital for further evaluation. At the time of the crash, Rubio was positioned 27th overall in the race standings.
The team expressed well wishes for Rubio's recovery, emphasizing the unfortunate nature of the incident. The crash highlights the proximity of spectators and support vehicles to riders on the race's often narrow roads.
