Tottenham Hotspur Shows Signs of Revival Under Manager Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham Hotspur's recent 2-0 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge has propelled them to 12th in the Premier League standings, their highest position since early January. This win, following a previous victory, is only the second time the team has secured consecutive league wins in 42 attempts, signaling a potential resurgence under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi, appointed in late March 2026 when the club was in a precarious position just above the relegation zone, has been working to transform the team's spirit and performance. The club's significant investment in the summer transfer window, exceeding £300 million, has seen new faces integrate into the squad. Players like Jan Paul van Hecke, Matheus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali, all acquired in the summer, impressed in the win against Chelsea. De Zerbi noted that it was Tonali's best game since joining the club.

The victory at Stamford Bridge was characterized by strong possession, with Tottenham controlling 68% of the ball, a figure not seen since April 2025. While Chelsea contributed with an own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders and a red card for Cole Palmer, Tottenham's performance was widely praised. Mathys Tel, who scored the decisive goal after a significant run, was highlighted as one of the best players on the pitch. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green commented on the team's controlled and comfortable display, suggesting that results like this can galvanize a side.

Despite a setback with James Maddison sustaining a suspected groin injury, De Zerbi expressed hope that it is not a serious issue, emphasizing the player's importance to the team. Maddison had also been instrumental in Tottenham's previous 3-1 home win against Coventry City. The return of key players from lengthy absences, including Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski, alongside Maddison, is seen as a crucial factor in the team's improved form.

De Zerbi attributed a shift in the team's mentality to a candid meeting held after their draw with Manchester United, where players and staff reportedly spoke honestly to each other. A subsequent warm-weather training camp in Marbella, which included a visit from boxer Anthony Joshua, is also believed to have contributed to the team's renewed spirit.

While the team's attacking output remains an area for improvement, with only eight goals in as many games, the defensive solidity shown in the win against Chelsea, including their first clean sheet at Stamford Bridge since 1986, offers further encouragement. The win is viewed as a significant step in De Zerbi's rebuilding project for Tottenham Hotspur.
