The summer football transfer window has closed, leaving a notable roster of talented players available to sign for free. These players, currently out of contract, can be acquired by clubs without a transfer fee.

Among the prominent free agents is Paul Pogba, 33, who last played for Monaco. His football career has been significantly impacted since his 18-month doping ban ended in March 2025. He made only six appearances for Monaco after joining last summer, and the club terminated his contract last month due to a series of injuries, a year before it was scheduled to expire.

Karim Benzema, 38, a former Ballon d'Or winner, has also seen his contract terminated. After leaving Real Madrid in 2023 for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, he moved to Al-Hilal just six months prior. Despite making three appearances for Al-Hilal this season, his contract was terminated on August 31, potentially influenced by the arrival of new attacking players at the club.

Riyad Mahrez, 35, another high-profile player formerly of the Saudi Pro League, had his contract with Al Ahli terminated. The Algerian winger joined Al Ahli in 2023 from Manchester City. Reports suggest he may remain in the Saudi league and is close to joining Al-Shabab.

Raheem Sterling, 31, was released by Feyenoord after a brief three-month spell. The former Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea winger is also scheduled to appear in court next month facing charges of dangerous driving. Sources have indicated he has experienced "an extremely tough couple of years."

Philippe Coutinho, 34, departed his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in February, citing mental fatigue. The former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder has not officially announced his retirement and has previously been linked with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS).

Jadon Sancho, 26, has had a turbulent period since his £73 million transfer to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. He has spent the last two and a half years on loan elsewhere, most recently at Aston Villa, following a difficult spell at Chelsea. Sancho has reportedly attracted interest from Dortmund for a potential return to the club.

Dani Carvajal, 34, widely considered one of the top right-backs of his generation, has been a free agent since his contract with Real Madrid concluded in June. He made 451 appearances for Real Madrid over 13 years and has reportedly been training with the Spanish Football Federation facilities over the summer alongside fellow free agent Joselu.

Jamie Vardy, 39, spent last season with Cremonese after a 13-year tenure with Leicester City. Following the Italian team's relegation to Serie B, he was allowed to leave. Vardy has been heavily linked with a return to the English Football League, with Wrexham, Sheffield Wednesday, and West Ham United reportedly showing interest.

David Alaba, 34, left Real Madrid in May after five years with the club. The former Bayern Munich star, who has won numerous league titles and Champions League trophies, was briefly rumored to be a transfer target for Manchester United. Despite speculation, Alaba has not yet signed with a new club.

Sergio Ramos, 40, a legendary Spanish defender, has been without a club since December 2025 after his departure from Mexican side Monterrey. Although he has not announced retirement, some reports suggest he still feels capable of competing at a high level. Earlier this year, he was part of a consortium that attempted to acquire a controlling stake in his former club Sevilla, but the bid was unsuccessful.
