Toone and Kelly Omitted from Lionesses Squad for World Cup Qualifiers
Manager Sarina Wiegman overlooks Manchester United's Ella Toone and Arsenal's Chloe Kelly for upcoming fixtures, while Leah Williamson returns.
Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone and Arsenal forward Chloe Kelly have been left out of the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches. Toone, 27, faces omission following an inconsistent start to the season, while 28-year-old Kelly has also not been selected.
Chelsea forward Aggie Beever-Jones and Arsenal duo Lotte Wubben-Moy and Taylor Hinds are also absent from the 23-player squad. Captain Leah Williamson makes her return to the team after missing previous matches against Spain and Ukraine.
There is a first senior call-up for 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder Lexi Potter, who has impressed in the Women's Super League, notably in Chelsea's recent 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Eighteen-year-old Erica Meg Parkinson of North Carolina Courage also receives a senior call-up.
Manchester City full-back Niamh Charles is included after returning from injury, and London City Lionesses forward Freya Godfrey and Liverpool defender Grace Fisk are the other uncapped players named in the squad.
England is scheduled to play Greece twice in October, first in Crete on Friday, October 9, and then in Leicester on Tuesday, October 13. Victories in these matches would advance them to the second round of play-offs, offering a chance to secure a spot in next summer's Women's World Cup in Brazil.
