Sandro Tonali, Tottenham Hotspur's recent high-profile signing, stated that the decision to join Spurs over other interested clubs, including Manchester City, was straightforward, taking only minutes to finalize. The Italian international, who moved from Newcastle United, described the club's approach and the project presented as key factors in his choice.
Tonali acknowledged the significant transfer fee, reported to be around £100 million, and explained that while a return to Italy was initially considered, the financial realities of Serie A clubs made it unfeasible. "England was our solution and we found the best solution in England for me, for my career, for my football, for my happiness, for my family," Tonali said. He indicated that discussions with two clubs led him to Tottenham after a brief initial conversation.
He highlighted the "100 per cent passion, 100 per cent seriousness" shown by Tottenham. The influence of manager Roberto De Zerbi and the club's director was also crucial in the deal. Tonali described a "mini connection" with De Zerbi, noting their previous interactions and De Zerbi's intense coaching style, which he finds appealing.
"Roberto said the project will be tough but will be perfect for me, for you, for the city, and we can do one of the best seasons because we have big players. We just have to put a lot of work in," Tonali explained.
Tonali also reflected on his time at Newcastle United, expressing gratitude for the people and the love for football there, and aimed to secure the best possible deal for his former club upon his departure. He stated his intention to approach his role at Tottenham as a "normal player" with passion and energy, irrespective of the transfer fee.
Tottenham has also recently invested in other signings, including Mateus Fernandes, to strengthen their midfield. Tonali spent a decade in Italy with Brescia before his move to Newcastle and is now looking forward to his new chapter in London.
