Tom Brady on Josh Allen's Evolution: Eliminating Negative Plays is Key

Tom Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, recently discussed the development of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, emphasizing the importance of eliminating negative plays as a crucial factor in Allen's growth.

Allen has started the current season with a strong statistical performance, leading the Bills to a 2-0 record. He has accumulated 582 passing yards and five touchdowns, with an additional 92 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. Notably, he has not thrown an interception through the first two games.

Speaking on Colin Cowherd's show, "The Herd," Brady attributed a significant part of Allen's development to his time under former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who later became the head coach for the New York Giants. Brady acknowledged Allen's existing strengths, such as his ability to improvise, but pointed to a more refined decision-making process as the most significant area of improvement.

"He's got the big arm, the legs and can kind of run the big plays," Brady said of Allen. "It’s always been ‘how can he eliminate the negative plays?’ The bonehead fumbles, the bonehead sacks and those plays are the ones that put your team behind the eight ball."

Brady, known for his own success in protecting the football, drew a parallel between Allen's progression and the discipline required to avoid costly mistakes. He suggested that learning to manage the game and prioritize preserving possession, even if it means throwing the ball away, has been instrumental in Allen's maturation.

"Sometimes the best play is throwing the ball away," Brady explained. "Playing for a second down and staying in those situations. Eliminating the negative plays. I think for him, that’s where I’ve seen his game mature the most."
