Tennessee Titans wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson is undergoing evaluation for a concussion following a hit during a joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Thursday. The play, which involved Bears safety Xavier Woods, also sparked a brief altercation between the two teams.
Titans head coach Robert Saleh did not hold back his criticism of the hit, describing it as "cheap." The incident occurred during a thud period, a practice format typically emphasizing controlled contact.
Guard Peter Skoronski, a teammate of Robinson's, echoed Saleh's sentiments, calling the hit "unacceptable" for a thud practice. "You can’t have guys like Wan’Dale going down like that and hits like that aren’t necessary," Skoronski stated. "We defend our teammates. I don’t encourage throwing punches or fighting or anything like that, but if cheap shots are taken on our guys, it’s unacceptable for us."
Quarterback Cam Ward, who threw the pass that led to Robinson being hit, took some responsibility. "I have to put him in a better situation," Ward said. "So that’s really more about me than it is about him. But he’s tough. He got up, and he’s good. I have to make sure I don’t put him in that kind of position again."
Robinson, 25, is in his first year with the Titans after signing a four-year, $70 million contract in the offseason. He previously played for the Giants before following former Giants head coach Brian Daboll to Tennessee as offensive coordinator.
The Titans are scheduled to face the Bears in their final preseason game on Saturday. Their regular season opener is against the Jets on September 13, leaving Robinson a little over two weeks to clear concussion protocol if he is diagnosed with one.
