ESPN has announced a multi-year contract extension for former college football quarterback Tim Tebow, a move that comes just before a wave of layoffs impacted numerous employees at the network.
Tebow, who will continue his role as a college football analyst on the SEC Network's pregame show "SEC Nation," expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. "I love this game and getting to talk about it every Saturday with the crews on SEC Network and ESPN is a gift I don’t take lightly," Tebow said in a statement. He is also expected to make appearances on "College Football Live" and "SportsCenter."
ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus affirmed Tebow's continued presence, stating, "Tim is one of the legendary players in the history of college football and he will continue to be a fixture in our coverage on SEC Network and across ESPN." Magnus highlighted Tebow's "unrivaled experience in the SEC combined with his knowledge and genuine passion for the game" as key to his credibility as a sports commentator.
The financial terms of Tebow's new contract were not disclosed. The extension was announced shortly before ESPN implemented significant layoffs affecting various on-air personalities and reporters. Among those reportedly affected were Ryan Clark, Karl Ravech, and Tom Pelissero, as well as David Lloyd, Stephania Bell, Charles Davis, Cam Newton, Bart Scott, Andreas Hale, and Dan Hajducky.
Tebow joined ESPN in a broadcasting role after his NFL career concluded in 2013, primarily focusing on college football coverage. Prior to his broadcasting career, Tebow was a highly decorated collegiate athlete, leading the University of Florida to two national championships in 2006 and 2008 and winning the Heisman Trophy in 2007. During his Heisman-winning season, he recorded 32 passing touchdowns and 3,286 passing yards, along with 23 rushing touchdowns and 895 rushing yards.
