As the college football season approaches, preseason polls offer a glimpse into expectations, but some teams ranked outside the top 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll are predicted to outperform their rankings and reach the College Football Playoff in 2026.

LSU Tigers

Ranked 13th in the preseason Coaches Poll, the LSU Tigers are considered strong contenders for a playoff spot. The hiring of Lane Kiffin as head coach is seen as a significant boost, instantly elevating the team's playoff prospects. The coaching staff also includes highly regarded offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and defensive coordinator Blake Baker, both potential Broyles Award candidates. Coupled with a reported $40 million roster investment and the nation's top-ranked transfer portal class, LSU possesses considerable talent. Despite their preseason ranking, the team is expected to be a formidable opponent, and a playoff appearance in Kiffin's first year is considered a crucial benchmark.

SMU Mustangs

The SMU Mustangs, ranked 20th, are also projected to be a playoff team. After a surprising playoff appearance in their first year in the ACC, SMU experienced a slight step back in record in 2025 but remained competitive, with their two conference losses decided by a combined five points. The team boasts strong returning production, particularly with veteran quarterback Kevin Jennings, who brings significant experience and a prior playoff appearance. Both offensive and defensive coordinators are returning, and a favorable conference schedule, avoiding matchups with Miami and Clemson during the regular season, aids their path. SMU is considered a strong contender to reach the ACC Championship Game, potentially facing Miami.

Houston Cougars

Ranked 24th, the Houston Cougars are highlighted as potential Big 12 champions and playoff contenders. The team ranks 17th nationally in overall returning production and fourth in offensive returning production. The addition of running back Makhi Hughes from the transfer portal is expected to bolster the offense. Defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong's unit is noted for its effective simulated pressure schemes. With veteran experience on both sides of the ball and a manageable Big 12 schedule that includes avoiding BYU and Arizona teams, Houston has a favorable path. An early matchup against Texas Tech, which has been picked to win the conference but may face quarterback uncertainty, presents an opportunity for Houston to establish an inside track to the conference title.
