Thornton Praises Mets' Young Pitching Rotation, Urges Signing of Tarik Skubal
Mets pitcher Zac Thornton highlighted the development of his young teammates and advocated for the acquisition of a proven ace.
New York Mets pitcher Zac Thornton has expressed optimism about the team's developing pitching rotation, citing the progress of young arms like Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Jonah Tong. Thornton, himself a part of this emerging core, shared his perspective on their collective growth.
"It's awesome to see everybody's success up here," Thornton told The Post. "It's cool just because we have been together in the offseasons in November down in Florida. We have been to the strength camps, we’ve been to the pitching camps that the Mets do a great job of setting up. So it’s just cool to see everybody’s work kind of flourish and just let everybody go do their thing on the field."
Nolan McLean, a candidate for National League Rookie of the Year, has shown significant promise. He posted a 3.16 ERA in 31 starts last season, recording 194 strikeouts over 179 2/3 innings. Despite the strides made by the young pitchers, Thornton's own place in the rotation heading into spring training is not guaranteed.
Thornton also made a case for the Mets to pursue a high-caliber starting pitcher, identifying two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal as a desirable target. The acquisition of an established ace like Skubal could significantly bolster the team's rotation as it continues to mature.
