Texas Bans Fan for Flipping Off Florida Players After Upset
University athletic director Chris Del Conte cited unsportsmanlike conduct as grounds for the permanent exclusion from home games.
The University of Texas has issued a permanent ban to a fan who was filmed gesturing offensively at Florida Gators players following the Longhorns' upset loss on Saturday. The incident occurred at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium after Florida secured a 27-24 victory.
A video circulated on social media showing the fan, wearing Texas apparel and possessing field access, directing the gesture at multiple Florida players as they left the field. While some players approached the fan, no altercation ensued. The video gained significant traction online, reportedly exceeding 3.5 million views.
In a statement released by the university, Chris Del Conte, Vice President and Athletic Director, condemned the fan's actions. "We pride ourselves on sportsmanship and treating our opponents with respect," Del Conte stated. "This individual’s actions did not reflect those values or meet our standards and will not be tolerated."
Del Conte extended an apology to the University of Florida and its football program, emphasizing that field access comes with a responsibility to represent the university with class. The fan's failure to uphold this standard resulted in the permanent ban from Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The loss marked Texas' second consecutive defeat, bringing their season record to 4-2. The team is set to host No. 7 Ole Miss next, a game considered crucial for their College Football Playoff aspirations.
