Tennis Player Terence Atmane Launches Racket at Spectators in Shanghai Masters Meltdown
French player Terence Atmane received a code violation and point penalty after a series of unsportsmanlike actions, including throwing his racket towards the crowd.
French tennis player Terence Atmane engaged in an explosive on-court tantrum during the Shanghai Masters qualifying round, culminating in him launching his racket towards spectators. The incident occurred after Atmane hit a forehand into the net in the third set.
Initially, the 24-year-old spiked his racket into the net and then obliterated a tennis ball, launching it over the grandstand. Following another unforced error, Atmane escalated his behavior by throwing his racket in the direction of the stands. The racket struck a metal bar, narrowly missing fans, who audibly reacted to the dangerous display. Despite the severity of his actions, Atmane was only issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and a point penalty, rather than being defaulted from the match.
Atmane's outburst did not conclude there. He proceeded to smash his racket against the net cord multiple times. The match ended shortly after when his opponent, Bernard Tomic, was serving for the match at 5-3 in the third set. Atmane then retired from the match, marking his second consecutive match retirement, having also withdrawn from a Challenger match against Elias Ymer the previous week.
The events have drawn sharp criticism from tennis fans and observers online, with many calling for Atmane to face a ban from the sport. Comments on social media platform X included calls for an automatic disqualification and condemnation of his lack of emotional control and professionalism. This incident occurred during the qualifying rounds for the Shanghai Masters, a significant event on the professional tennis circuit.
