Tennessee has dismissed heralded edge rusher Chaz Coleman from its football program, ending a highly publicized transfer portal acquisition that has devolved into a significant financial and roster setback for the Volunteers.
Coleman, a 19-year-old transfer from Penn State, was reportedly a no-show at spring practices and the spring game before being removed from the team's roster page this week. The program announced his departure, with coach Josh Heupel stating that Coleman is "dealing with some things off the field" and needs to work through them.
Tennessee pursued Coleman aggressively, reportedly agreeing to pay him around $2 million in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation, making it the most significant NIL transaction of their offseason. The program beat out competitors like Ohio State and LSU for his commitment. It remains unclear how much of the agreed-upon sum has already been paid to Coleman.
According to reports, Coleman's departure was not solely due to financial or behavioral issues. He was medically disqualified from the program. This comes after a period of reported homesickness, pressure associated with his high-profile status, and ongoing physical and mental health strains. Coleman was reportedly still experiencing lingering vertigo from a head injury sustained during his time at Penn State.
During his freshman season at Penn State in 2025, Coleman recorded one sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, three quarterback hurries, and three tackles for loss in nine games. He was a four-star recruit before enrolling at Penn State.
The dismissal comes as Tennessee aims for a rebound season. The Volunteers finished 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the SEC in 2025, a year after achieving a No. 8 ranking in the College Football Playoff rankings. Head coach Josh Heupel has led the team through significant roster changes in recent years.
